Jamie Lee Curtis – A True Recovery Story
In Variety‘s Recovery Issue, prominent entertainment figures offer insights on navigating a sober life in Hollywood and elsewhere. Jamie Lee Curtis had just turned 40. She and her husband had been married for 14 years and have two children together. A two-time Golden Globe winner, Jamie Lee had just landed on the New York Times best-seller list with her second children’s book “Today I Feel Silly & Other Moods That Make My Day.
One night in 1998, Curtis was doing what she usually did – She was in the kitchen of her Los Angeles-area home making dinner for her family. She reached into her robe pocket and scooped up five Vicodin. She swallowed them all at once with a swig of red wine.
Curtis hadn’t realize that a friend was behind her watching her from the doorway. She said, ‘You know, Jamie, I see you. I see you with your little pills, and you think you’re so fabulous and so great, but the truth is you’re dead. You’re a dead woman.’”
“The jig was up,” Curtis says. “Now I knew someone knew. I had been nursing a secret Vicodin addiction for a very long time — over 10 years.”
